My Day at The Vans Warped Tour '03

So I'm wide awake, board and I can't fall asleep on Sunday at 4:30 in the morning (actually I guess it would be Monday by then, but regardless,) and I decided that I needed to amuse my insomnia with something, and my journal came to mind.  I though about what I could write about, and the only thing I could come up with was Warped.  It's been fixated on my mind ever since it happened and I truly doubt that I will ever need to remind myself of anything, but I figured that in the off chance that I one day get amnesia and forget everything about it, I will have to have a refresher.  So by the time 5am rolls around I'm knee high in my efforts to try and re-create (on paper) my day at The Vans Warped Tour 2003.  So here's how it all went down.

So its Thursday night and me, Kylie and Emily (from Walla Walla Washington) are over at Afras. We all met up around 9:00pm. Hannah and her friend Sarah stopped by around 8:30, just before Kylie showed up, and left us around 10:00 when we decided to get cracking on out shirts that we planned on making. We had found shirts that we wanted to use to put iron on transfer images. I put a bunch of band logos on mine and on the scraps of transfer paper we all wrote out some of our favorite lyrics and ironed them on. Af made an, (who couldve guessed this one) Audrey Hepburn shirt which turned out really well, and Emily made one out of a classic post card called Kiss the War Goodbye. It looked so good.

After some slight T-shirt burnage and some very chaotic packing we headed up to the kitchen to indulge in a late night snack of cheese pizza pops, mini fudgicles and tea, (Afra style with milk and sugar). We discovered that we all have rather different eating habits. I eat pizza pops normally, picking them up and eating them. Kylie approaches with as much caution as you would use with a corned bull. Emmy eats it like its pizza, but with the aid of a fork, and Afra eats it like a freak, squishing all the cheese out, eating it with a fork and then devouring the pop as she calls it. Emmy managed to dump the majority of her cheese contents onto her pants but somehow got them washed, dried and wearable for the next day. After our binge session we went back down stairs to talk and fool around on the Internet (or the interweb as Af and Emmy call it), scary piercings and tattoos being the main late night attraction for us. At about 12:30am Emily decided to call it a night, and by 1:15 Afra was pretty much out. Kylie and I talked for another 15 minutes or so then decided that 5:45 would roll around pretty early and we headed off for bed. Kylie then decided to grace Afra and I with his un-makeuped self about 10 minutes later. He still looked perfect which is truly unfair.

As expected the ¼ to 6:00 wake up call was rather painful. Afras mum woke us up and reluctantly Afra got up to go have a shower while I rolled over and went back to sleep. After she got out her and Emily got ready while I slept. With much effort Afra got me conscious and instructed Emily to keep me awake while she did her makeup. It was quite the task, and Emily sucked at it considering that I fell asleep another two times. In all fairness though Afra was right when she said, (and I quote) "Its like trying to keep a kid out of a coma!" How very true. So I finally get up, get dressed and get Afra to iron my hair. We were out the door by 6:30, un-fed, un-slept and wired for Warped.

We were on the 8:00 ferry at the low low cost of only $92 for the 6 of us and a van. (Seriously could it be a little more expensive to eat soggy eggs and get seasick?) The first thing we did was run like bitches for the cafeteria line up. We all got our food and found a place to sit down. Half way through my Belgian waffles I opted to cut my food with my fork and I noticed that Kylie was doing the same. (We both got Belgian waffles, or as he would say " The same as her, what ever their called I dont remember Oh thats embarrassing!" (Funny kid eh?)) We finished and went to go sit down with CDs and walkmen in hand. Later Afra, Emily and I went to the bathroom to go do our makeup and we met a girl who overheard us talking about Warped and told us that she was going too. This is about the part where I get seasick. So, Afras doing my eyeliner (because shes godly with my makeup and I trust her completely) and I get totally dizzy and almost hurl. I decided it would be in both our best interests for me to sit down on the counter until she finished so I didnt yack up waffles on our outfits. Once we were done we stumbled back to our seats where I started to feel a wee bit better. We then headed down to the van and were in downtown Vancouver by 10:00am. By this time it already felt like 4:00pm, but hey, what do you expect when your up at 6:00. We checked into the Gaige Tower Residences at about 11:00 and make ourselves at home in each of the 6 bedrooms. The rooms went as this: Afras parents in room 1, Kyle in room 2, me in room 3, Emily in room 4, room 5 empty but always wide open, and Afra taking up space in room 6. We had a common front door that lead to a central round hall with all our rooms, a bathroom and a hall leading to the kitchen, branching off of it. The kitchen and TV/living room we connected and shared a balcony. We all went on a writing rampage on all of the white boards on the bedroom doors. They were pretty funny stuff. Once Kylie was all prettied up we left for Warped.

We first went down to the SUB (student union building) to get some cash for Afra, where it occurs to Kylie that he forgot his ticket. (Thank god he remembered it then and not later!) So Kyle and I run back to the building and finally hit the 17th floor only to forget which room we were in. We decided that we were room C considering that Home was written on its white board. We tried for about 5 minutes before totally freaking out. I decided that it wasnt our room and said that we should try A but Kylie was positive that home meant home so we tried a few more times before I grabbed the key and let us into room A on the first try. We go in and Kylie grabs his ticket and giant red comb that when I questioned him about it he said that he didnt even notice that he picked it up, and I got my spike collar to put on him to make him ever so PR. (It really looked hot on him!) We ran like hell back down to the parking lot and was greeted by everyone all ready to go. Getting into the van was almost as interesting as getting out. (Getting out Kylie managed to slip and hit his head on the car beside usit was quite talented actually.) Afra was opening the door and managed to hit the car beside us. She chipped the paint and left a small (or huge, depending how you look at it) dent. (Well, actually she only left a dent because I chipped the paint when we got out the first time, but shhh!) So were all in the car, totally freaking about with excitement about the day ahead of us. When we pull up we find out that we must walk from the parking lot down a gravel road for about 5 minutes, which isnt a problem at all, we didnt care, to the big opening gate, fully equipt with friskers and ticket rippers. The frisk was week, and secutity managed to miss all three of the cameras that we were packing, but I guess thats a good thing, right? We walk in and are in complete awe of all the people and kiosks set up. They had piercing booths, Dasani (yea, the water) booths, locker checks and a booth for every kind of band merchandise and clothing company imaginable. It was madness and the only thing of its kind that Ive ever seen. It was love at first sight!

We immediately headed for the locker check like we had planned all along. The guy was so hot gladly paid him the 3 dollars to guard our crap. (We were within the first 10 people to check in our bags too which I was amused at.) We quickly decided that we would meet at the giant inflatable mohawk man if we got separated, which thank god never happened, and headed down to the actual stadium to see what else we were instore for. To our surprise, just down a huge gravel slope was a massive football field, and I swear a half. Everywhere you looked were people with mohawks, spikes and every color hair, and band booths everywhere. (Yes I know I said everywhere twice, but it needs to be exaggerated to even come close to the actuality of it all.) (HA! And I thought the Nickleback/Default concert was big!) We decided to try and find a schedule and after about 10 minutes we found a giant inflatable thing that had all the bands, stages and times posted on it. (It must have been at least 15ft high, (and it starting to seem like everything there was either a booth or inflatable the giant igloo, the mohawk guy) but the mohawk and igloo were easily 25ft.) We decided to check out the first two bands which were Vendetta Red (who Afra wanted to see but turned out to be really bad live) and S.T.U.N. (who so majorly kicked ass!) We sat down infront of the stages and waited for S.T.U.N. to start (they had to finish their sound check which was fine with us since we got to stare at the ever so hot dark green haired roady.) The band kicked ass which was cool considering that their CD had just come out two days before our show and being on Warped was awesome publicity for them. After they played and we found out that Vendetta red was bad we decided to walk around a little. We found their booth (S.T.U.N.s) and they were there signing autographs. They were really nice and signed my shirt. The lead signer was really cute and super nice. The drummer though, is my personal favorite. He was signing my shirt and hit my bra, and hes like "Oh." He moved my bra down a bit, but at first I thought he was undoing it, but then he finished and moved by bra back in place and straightened out my shirt and smoothed by back out which I thought was adorable and said "There, all done." He was very cute, and I proceeded to tell everyone that for the next 10 minutes or so. We roamed around a bit more, looked at clothes, Afra bought a super cute Simple Plan T-shirt and listened to bits and pieces of bands that were all really good.

We headed back up to the locker check when we decided that we were all about to die of dehydration. The cute guy was still there and laughed when he remembered our bag, which consisted of two messenger bags, a purse and 3 sweatshirts all tied together. We managed to extract Emilys bag and mine but were having some trouble tying it all back together. Thats when Mr. Im-so-cute-and-I-protect-bags-like-theres-no-tomorrow decided that the solution to all was duct tape, and I honestly couldnt have agreed more. Between Emily, me and the cutie we managed to tape it all together and get my hand and his taped stuck together, (Not that Im complaining!)

We went to the booth beside, with yet another cute guy, and forked up $3 a piece for a bottle of water. (Yea, *cough cough* -rip off!- ) But hey, they had a giant trough of water that you could refill your bottles, so it wasnt all bad. We then decided to check out the upper stages and got to listen to Rufio, (a great band that Emily loves, and that now Im obsessed with too.) We went on a mad search down to the booths again, determined to get their autographs, but the guys took too long and we had to leave because it was time to go and wait in line to get Simple Plans signatures. We got in line at 4:00 and waited and hour and 20 minutes only to be 3 people away from the cut off point. Evidently the guys could only sign autographs for an hour or so, and we got royally screwed out of meeting the guys. Oh we yelled and threw tantrums, but what can yea do. The sweet part is that Pierre looked really upset that we couldnt sign anymore. When the security first came out hes like "What, no!" That was rather comforting to us. While we were in line we also saw the girl form the ferry. Shes like "OH, hey its the girls from the ferry!" We said hi but that was about it. And seeing as Kylie didnt care about Simple Plan he went and sat down listening to music for like 45 minutes while we died in line. We were tiered so we went and sat down and listened to a really good band that Kylie and I both loved called Arraya. We all got mini doughnuts too, and that was all we ate that day (except for Emily who also had a falafel.) We also heard The Unseen and Emily and I were the only ones that liked them. They were good, but I had also heard them before which helps too. Then it was time for Simple Plan.

(Oh yea, sometime between meeting up with Kylie again and seeing Arraya we went back and got our bag.) (And the entire time we were in line for Simple Plan, Xtream 104.9 was throwing free stuff off the roof of the van and so was Giver Clothing.) So were infront of the Volcom Stage watching the Simple Plan sound check, (checking out a new hot roady) when this really horrible band came on the stage next to the Volcom. And theyre like 10m away so its kinda hard to ignore the jackass. Hes going on and on about fucking this and fucking that and the damn little fuckers. He just wouldnt shut up. And the worst part of it is that he was easily 45 years old. I swear that I will never in a million years voluntarily listen to Ghetto Boombox (I think thats what they call themselves). I will have to see tortured and mutilated in order to listen to it. Shiver- it was horrible! But then Simple Plan came on and all became well. They started things off with Worst Day Ever which seemed a little strange to me seeing as it was Warped and all, but as soon as they finished Pierre informed us that this was far from the worst day ever. Then they played Grow Up and Pierre insisted that everyone mosh like theyve never moshed before. Before I know whats happening the other three run like a bitch and leave me alone to fend for myself. I figure its just a bunch of little kid and that I had nothing to worry about. Well, little did I know, I had a huge guy behind me who decided to pick me up (quite literally) and throw me into the middle of it all. (Oh yea, and the only circle pit I saw was courtesy of The Unseen just remembered that.) I was totally fine in the mosh pit, it was fun, until things got kind of violent. Then I started to worry...

Now I'm gunna take a break and the rest of my day will be up here shortly, so don't fret!

Lmfao, it's like step by step commentary of my day.  All I needed was to remember the times that everyone went to the bathroom and it'd be like you were right there with us!  So for all of your who were wondering, I'm evidently a very detailed person in the wee hours of the morn. Oh lordie, and when I get the pictures up you'll be able to picture us and all! Lmao
